Cafe Atlantis in Panachel, Atitlan
With lush tropical gardens in the heart of Panajachel’s zona viva, Cafe Atlantis offers a wide range of choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as well as a chic spot for drinking and partying by day or night.
Two spacious beer gardens with covered tables extend away from the street to provide a quiet place to eat or toss back a few drinks. The tropical atmosphere makes you feel almost as if you’re in a rain forest rather than on Pana’s busy Calle Principal. The wood-paneled bar, film and art posters, Tiffany-style lamps, soft music and lighting, and a genuine Maximon perched atop a shelf of liquor give the bar a French bistro feel.
Dining at Atlantis
The menu consists of Continental fare such as Italian, Greek and German, as well as Asian dishes and Guatemalan specialties like the Pepian Chicken. While spending the night at Posada los Encuentros last month, I tried the Mussaka.
A large bowl arrived promptly. Filled with zucchini, tomatoes, onions and other vegetables in a melted cheese, it was lightly spiced with just enough garlic and other herbs. Atlantis also serves a meat-based version of the Musaka.
Some other intriguing dishes on the menu were the Tilapia, the Lasagna (meat or vegetarian) and Fish and Chips. The pizza is Atlantis’s Tuesday special: two for one pizza. For lunch, the hamburgers, nachos and other snacks go well with a cold beer or a smoothie. Also, keep an eye out for dining and drink specials posted on the signs in front.
Eggs Benedict, Strammer Max (a German dish), crepes and Latin-style entrees make breakfast at Atlantis a tasty way to start the day. And coffee costs only Q5.
Drink Specials, Live Music
Happy Hour features two for one Cubas, among other drinks, every day from 4 PM-10 PM. The latest drink special has been Caipiriuha Do Brasils for Q15.
Proprietors Juergen and Astrid call Atlantis a “music pub,” with live bands playing everything from reggae and blues, to rock and ranchero. The bands play in the beer garden area, with plenty of space for dancing and partying.
