Lake Atitlan Dining:
Smokin' Joe's BBQ in San Pedro
La Piscina, the only place in San Pedro where you can swim in the water and eat the fish, is also well-known as the home of Smokin' Joe's BBQ—the only authentic Southern-style barbeque in Central America.
Smoked or grilled by a true Southerner from north Florida (which is another way of saying south Georgia), meals costs as little as Q25 for a half-pound hamburger. There's also chicken, pork or beef ribs, sliced pork or beef, ham, fish and a huge filet mignon wrapped in bacon.
Big servings of Southern-style side dishes such as potato salad, green beans, mashed potatoes and others, come with the meal. The Central American version of Peach Cobbler, a Southern dessert, is made with pineapples, and it's only Q10.
Several home-made barbeque sauces and Pica Buga hot salsa, all made by Smokin' Joe, bring out the flavor of Guatemala's best barbeque. Joe also makes a gourmet mustard that is perfect on the steak and fish.
Speaking of fish, it's usually Tuna, sometimes Dorado and—if you are in luck—a thick, tender Shark steak or filet. The fish is shipped directly from boats on the Pacific coast in coolers to ensure freshness.
Flintstones, Eat the Flintstones
If you are really hungry or want to split a plate, the Flintstone Ribs are a monster. The bones on these babies are so big, they can be used for Filipino Stick Fighting! Flintstone Burgers contain a full pound of Joe's specially-ground meat that gives it a distinct flavor and texture.
The big event starts at noon every Sunday at La Piscina and has the feel of a picnic or a family reunion. It's a festive, fun day beside a big swimming pool with green grass, bananas dangling from a tree, Boccie Ball games, occasional live music, cheap beer and drink specials.
People from around the lake often show up on Sundays for one of San Pedro's “don't miss meals.” Smokin' Joe's also does catering for parties and special events, and sometimes does the barbeque at other San Pedro locations such as Bar La Playa on weekdays. But no matter where Joe's cooking, you want to get there early and bring a big appetite.
