Rental Houses: Xecujil Lago Atitlan in San Marcos la Laguna
They say the best way to eat a mango is in the bathtub. That's actually the best way to drink organic San Pedro coffee too, but if you've been traveling in Central America for a while, you probably know that bathtubs are almost impossible to find.
Hot Tubs Heated by Sunlight
Enter Solar Pools, San Pedro's solar-heated tubs. Located on Seventh Avenue next door to the Buddha Bar, this is a great place to relax and get rid of all that grime from being on the road. After all, they offer what for most travelers soon becomes a sort of holy grail: hot water!
You also have a choice of tubs too: a small one for two people, and larger ones if you want to bring all your friends. Shared public tubs cost Q40 per person. However, if you want a little privacy for some quality time with your beloved, you may prefer a private tub, tucked away behind a bamboo screen to keep out prying eyes, for Q45 per person. A tub for one person is Q60. The great thing about these prices is that there is no time limit: You can stay as long as you want.
There is no suicide-shower system here to heat up the water, so no risk of electrocuting yourself. Coiled black hoses soak up the heat from the sun to provide you with a comfortable, environmentally friendly soak. Each tub is thoroughly cleaned and filled fresh regularly, so you don't have to worry about hygiene.
However, you need to reserve your tub about two hours beforehand to allow enough time for the staff to get everything ready. While you lie back and relax in your own little slice of heaven, you can enjoy the sounds of birds in the garden or, during the rainy season, the pitter-patter of raindrops on the roof.
Solar Pools also serves coffee, cake and yes, you're allowed to enjoy this in the tub! What better way is there to spend a relaxing day?
Therapeutic Massages Too
Actually there is a way to make your experience even better: simply throw in a therapeutic massage such as chiromassage or hemolymphodrainage. Solar Pools uses the services of trained and certified massage therapists to ensure your wellbeing. Acupuncture is available too and you can also join one of the yoga classes in the beautiful garden.
Of course there's no point in being clean when you then have to put on smelly clothes again. No problem: Simply drop off your laundry and pick it up later the same day, clean and fresh-smelling.
Solar Pools is open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m., or until you finally manage to get out of the tub and join the real world again.
